THE 1st WHITE COAT CEREMONY(WCC) FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS IN RWANDA IN PICTURES

For medical students, the ritual of donning the white coat for the first time is an emotional first step on their journey into medicine. On September 26th, 2014, the University of RWANDA, School of Medicine, Departement of Medicine and Surgery, class of 2018 gathered with faculty, family and friends in the White Coat ceremony(WCC) organized by the  Student of 3rd year(DOC1). The WCC was at the same time of closure of the orientation week, where the College of Medicine and Health Sciences had planned for a variety of events during its yearly orientation week to welcome, orient and introduce new students to the life at different campuses of the College. During this period, new students were helped to know services and where they are offered and those who offer them. It is in this light that Prof. Philip Cotton, the Principal of the College and Academic staff approached the new students.
The white coat ceremony(WCC) had taken place in the Main Auditorium of the University of RWANDA Huye Campus . This Ceremony is  relatively a new annual event (really occurred around the end of the 19th century) in several medical schools that marks the student’s transition from the study of preclinical to clinical health sciences.  In this ceremony, the Principal encouraged new students to pursue medicine, to uphold professionalism and values of a medical doctor. During the White Coat Ceremony, students recited the Hippocratic Oath and were taught on the values of the white coat and values to be upheld for the health professionals.
Normally, during the White Coat Ceremony, Students was coated by the Dean for Medical education and students approach the podium and loudly introduce themselves to the audience (mainly family and friends who are recognized for their support) and then have a seat, and the principle reminds students of the importance of the white coat.
White coat is a clock of healing, a clock of compassion and mental privilege that give us profound access to the lives of our patients; it’s a symbol of knowledge and technical skill which puts medical doctors and health professionals in a position in partnership with patients and other members of the healthcare team. With it, students are urged to place patients first in their interests before everything else.
